Although technically in 2007, Mike and I continued our
goal of hiking the entire Arizona Trail, a
continuous 800+ mile trail across Arizona, from the Mexican Border to
Utah. Over Christmas, we hiked two sections across the Superstition
Wilderness, about 50 miles. It was a cold trip, and we had frozen water
bottles on Christmas! Here are some of the highlights (click on the
thumbnail to see full size):
|

Here we are at the beginning of
the Reavis Canyon
passage of the AZTrail. Michael J and
Margie were nice enough to drive us out there and hike a little ways to
see us off. |

The views out towards the
Superstitions were beautiful.
|
|

There was a lot of water in the
creeks at the beginning of the hike, so we could get away with only
carrying a couple of liters each. |

On day 2, we hiked from Whitford
Canyon ( at the bottom on the hill) up to the peak of Montana
Mountain. A big "up"! |
|

Here is where we have been.
The really dark nearly square mountain at the right in the distance is
where we started. |

Here is the other side of the
mountain, and where we are headed. The peaks above the clouds to the
right of center is Four Peaks, our destination. |
|

We found a great campsite along
Rogers Creek for night two. We actually saw 2 day hikers before we
set up camp. The first we have seen since we left. The
reflectors on the Hilleberg tent
work great!! |

Hiking down on the Reavis Trail
down toward Reavis Ranch. Snow and frozen ground the whole way. |
|

Here is one of the cairns to mark
a lightly traveled section. You can
almost see the trail wandering toward the juniper in the middle. |

Mike looks just as good now as
when we started! |
|

The view from out campsite (the
only flat area we had seen for miles). Thank goodness for the
AZTrail guide that told us where it was at. The mountain in the
background is Four Peaks. We are getting closer! |

We saw bear tracks and fresh bear
scat about 20 minutes hiking from where we camped. I still haven't
seen a bear, but this is close! |
|

It is hard to imagine where the
trail actually goes from here. |

In Cottonwood Canyon. A
welcome sight in Arizona! |
|

Roosevelt Lake - The end is near! |

Roosevelt Lake Bridge. This
section officially ends at the far end. |
|

The beginning of passage 20, the
Four Peaks section. We will start here another time. |

At the end!!!!
Michael J drove around to
Roosevelt to pick us up. |
